XI INTERNATIONAL VIOLIN COMPETITION
"CITTA' DI BRESCIA"

BRESCIA, Italy, October 22 - 29, 2007

RULES

I

The 11th International Violin Competition “Città di Brescia” will take place in Brescia (Italy) from the 22nd to the 29th of October, 2007.
The Competition is open to violinists of all nationalities born after the October 30, 1972.
The Competition is not open to the First and Second place prizes of the previous “Città di Brescia International Violin Competition”.


II

To enter, the application form must be sent to the following address:

I- 25121 Brescia.
Deadline for the receipt of applications is June 30, 2007. The postmark will be taken as proof of the date of mailing.

The complete and signed application form must be accompanied by the following documents:
-birth certificate or equivalent document;
-two colour passport photographs signed on the reverse;
-a curriculum vitae including any certification of musical education, teachers and activities carried ;
-a DVD or VHS (Pal/Ntsc) Video recording containing:

N. Paganini
One Capriccio to be chosen by the applicant from the 24 Capricci from Op. 1 for solo violin;

J .S. Bach
Two contrasting movements from the Sonate and Partite for solo with the exception of:
Adagio and Fuga of theSonata in G minor no.1 BWV 1001
Grave and Fuga of the Sonata in A minor no.2 BWV 1003
Adagio and Fuga of the Sonata in C major no.3 BWV 1005
Ciaccona of the partita in D minor no.2 BWV 1004.

L. van Beethoven
Sonata n. 5 in F major op. 24 for violin and piano: first movement “Allegro”.

The Beethoven Sonata must be accompanied by a pianist chosen by the applicant.
The recording must be accompanied by a written statement of authenticity signed by both the applicant and the recording technician indicating date, place of the recording, as well as the pieces recorded and their duration.
The material sent will not be returned and will used only for the selection.
Winners of the first place, second and third place prizes of the most recent edition of violin competitions belonging to the World Federation of Music Competitions in Geneva will be granted entry on submission of documents only, without the recording and entrance fee. In this case, the applicant should attach written documentation.
Incomplete applications or those sent after the due deadline date will not be taken into consideration.


IV

Three musicians nominated by the Artistic Management will perform the pre-selection on the basis of the curriculum and the recordings.
The 35 applicants admitted will be informed by letter postmarked no later than September 10, 2007 and sent to the address provided on the application form.
Admitted applicants must confirm their participation by paying a registration fee of € 100,00 (free of any charge) no later then September 30, 2007 to the following account:

Registration fees cannot, for any reason, be refunded.
A copy of the payment receipt issued by the bank is to be sent to the Competition Secretariat immediately payment.

The Artistic Committee reserves the right to replace possible renunciatory selected applicants.
The new admitted applicants will be chosen from the excluded pass-list available at the Competition’s Secretary. The new applicants admitted will be informed by telegram within October 5, 2007 and they will pay the registration fee within October 10, 2007.


V

Participants must register in person on October 21, 2007 at 6 p.m. with a valid identity card or passport. The meeting place will be made known.
Participants who fail to attend the draw will be admitted to the competition only if the absence is due to circumstances beyond their control.
The candidates will be called to perform in alphabetic order starting from the letter that will be decided by ballot immediately after the roll call.
The order of performance will remain unaltered throughout the competition.


VI

The Competition consists of 3 rounds:

Preliminary Round

Semi-final Round

Two sessions of the Final Round:
First Final Round (Recital) – Second Final Round (Concerto with Orchestra).

Preliminary Round, Semi-final round and First Final Round (Recital) will take place at Auditorium S. Barnaba; the Second Final Round (Concerto with Orchestra) will take place at Teatro Grande the October 29, 2007 at 9 p.m.
All rounds are open to the public.

A maximum of 10 candidates will be admitted to the semi-final round.
A maximum of 3 candidates will be admitted to the First and Second Final Round.


VII

Accompanying pianists will be at the competitors disposal free of charge. The competitors are allowed to supply their own accompanist for all the tests at their own expense, with the exclusion of the rehearsal and execution of the Trio in the semi final test.
The name of the private accompanist of the competitor must be indicated just in the application form.
Before the first preliminary round the competitor will have the right to rehearse for 30 minutes with the official accompanist, before the Semi-final round for 45 minutes (excluding the rehearsal of the Trio) and 90 minutes for the First Final round.


VIII

The candidates must play by memory. Sonatas for Violin and Piano, Ravel “Trio”, the short piece for solo violin taken from a Living Composer or the Donatoni piece can be played with music score.

I PRELIMINARY ROUND ( Max. 30 minutes)

-Adagio and Fuga from Sonata n. 1 in G minor BWV 1001
-Grave and Fuga from Sonata n. 2 in A minor BWV 1003
-Adagio and Fuga from Sonata n. 3 in C major BWV 1005
-Ciaccona from Partita n. 2 in D minor BWV 1004

Two Capriccios chosen from the 24 Capricci Op. 1

A virtuoso piece chosen from:

II SEMI-FINAL ROUND (Max. 60 minutes)

A sonata for violin and piano chosen from: J. Brahms, R. Schumann, F. Schubert (Fantasia or Duo in A Major);

A short piece for solo violin taken from a Living Composer of the Country of the Candidate
or
F. Donatoni, Ciglio for solo violin, 1989, -Edizioni Ricordi, Milan- (available at the Competition’s Secretariat).

A copy of the score of the short piece for solo violin taken from a Living Composer must be sent to the Competition’s Secretary by September 30, 2007, failure to do so may lead the exclusion from the Competition.

A virtuoso piece for violin and piano or solo violin chosen from:
E. Ysaye, M. Ernst, M. Ravel, P. De Sarasate, K. Szymanowski, I. Stravinskij, E. Chausson.

M. Ravel, Trio in A major for Violin, Cello and Piano: execution of the “Moderato” rehearsaled by the candidate in the thirty minutes immediately prior to the semi-final round in a separate room with a pianist and a cellist invited by the Organizer Committee;


IIIa FIRST FINAL ROUND (Min. 60 minutes and Max. 80 minutes)

Recital with free program chosen by the participant from the chamber and bravura repertoire for solo violin or violin and piano.
The programme must include the Sonata in G minor of C. Debussy and an important composition of the 20th century.
The works chosen must be performed entirely without the transcription.
The finalists are not allowed to play pieces they have already performed.

IIIb SECOND FINAL ROUND (with Symphonic Orchestra)

W.A. Mozart
Concerto in A major K 219: first movement “Allegro aperto”

A Concerto for violin and orchestra chosen from:
-L. van Beethoven
-J. Brahms
-F.Mendelssohn B. (op. 64)
-P. I. Tchaikovskij

The programme sent at the time of application cannot be modified.



JURY

The jury of the Competition will be consist of 7 eminent musicians, the majority of whom being foreign.
The composition of the Jury will be made public on the official website www.concorsoviolinobrescia.org within the month of February 2007. Any Juror having or having had a teaching or professional relationship with one or more candidates in the three years prior the beginning of the contest, will abstain from voting on the performances of these candidates. This withholding of votes must be explicitly laid out in the minutes. Upon taking office Jury must declare his or her position as regards the candidates.
The Jury reserves the right:
1- not to award one or more prizes.
2- to stop the performance if it rxceeds the maximum time limit.
The Jury's decision will be inappellable
The Artistic Management has the right to taking part to the jury’s works as a observer.



PRIZES (net of the tax)

Grand Prix “Concorso Internazionale di Violino “Città di Brescia”- In Memoria di Mario Conter (indivisibile) € 14.000,00 to be award to the Competition’s winner

Prize “Romano Romanini” : € 3.500,00 to be award to the second place laureate

Prize “Vittoria Alata”: € 2.500,00 to be award to the third place laureate

The Organinizing Committtee will guarantees to the winners of “Grand Prix Concorso Internazionale di Violino Città di Brescia- In Memoria di Mario Conter” a tournée in Italy and abroad and to the winner of Prize “Romano Romanini” a tournée in Italy


The list of the musical institutions which have agreed to offer Concerts to the winners( to be contacted directly by who are entitled) will be published within the end of 2006 on the web site www.concorsoviolinobrescia.org.

Only the Gran prix - Concorso Internazionale di violino “Città di Brescia” will be able to use the title of absolute winner of the competition, penality loss the title and point out the abuse to the World Federation Competition in Ginevra.




FINAL INSTRUCTIONS

The Organization Committee has the right to make audio and video recordings of all the rounds of the competition

By signing the application the Competitor completely accepts the rules and regulations of the competition and authorises, according to Low decree 30.6.2000 n. 196, the use of his/her personal data for the carrying out of the competition and the relative Artistic Promotion.

In any question concerning rules or procedures the text in the Italian Language shall be considered as applicable.
