ANNOUNCEMENT OF COMPETITION

CLARIFICATIONS
February 1, 2010
The article 3 of the announcement of competition ("The first, second, and third prize winners of the latest editions of violin competitions belonging to the World Federation of International Music Competitions of Geneva will automatically be admitted to the Semifinal Round and will be exempt from the application fee) means: "The first, second, and third prize winners of the last three editions of violin competitions...".

The Elimination Round Repertoire is entirely for Solo Violin.


REGULATIONS

I
The Twelfth City of Brescia International Violin Competition will be held in Brescia from October 21 to 30, 2010. The competition is open to violinists of all nationalities born after October 30, 1970. The First and Second Prize Winners of previous Editions of the City of Brescia International Violin Competition may not participate.

II
The application form must be sent to the Secretariat of the competition at the following address:

The application form can be sent also filling the form published on the website www.concorsoviolinobrescia.org
The deadline for application is an June 30, 2010 postmark on the envelope.

III
The application form must be duly filled in, signed, and accompanied by:
- a birth certificate or equivalent document,
- two passport format color photographs signed on the back,
- a curriculum vitae or resume with documentation about studies completed, teachers, and activities.

In case of inscription by internet the documentation must be sent to the address email info@concorsoviolinobrescia.org in electronical format and the application form and the photographs must not to be signed.
The first, second, and third prize winners of the last three editions of violin competitions
* belonging to the World Federation of International Music Competitions of Geneva will automatically be admitted to the Semifinal Round and will be exempt from the application fee. In this case, the competitors must enclose written documentation.
Incomplete forms and those sent after the deadline will not be considered.
The Artistic Direction reserves the right to limit the number of participants if there are more than 80 applications. In this case, the artistic documentation enclosed with the application shall be evaluated first, and the order of arrival of the applications shall be borne in mind.
If an application is not accepted, the application fee will be reimbursed.

The competitors must enclose with the application, a receipt for payment of € 100.00 by wire transfer to the following bank coordinates:

The amount of the bank transfer shall be net of expenses from both the ordering and the recipient bank. The fee paid shall not be repaid in any case except for those found in point III of this announcement.

V
The competitors must present themselves at the opening ceremony on October 21, 2010 at 6:00 pm at the San Barnaba Auditorium, Brescia, 1, piazzetta A. Benedetti Michelangeli, with an identification document (passport or identity card).
Failure to appear at roll call shall entail exclusion from the competition, unless justified by events beyond the competitor’s control.
The competitors shall be called to appear alphabetically starting with the letter drawn after the roll call.
The candidates shall appear in the same order throughout the rest of the competition.

VI
The competition comprises four rounds:
Elimination Round
Semifinal Round
1st Final Round
2nd Final Round
(with the Orchestra dell'Accademia Musicale di Schio conducted by Carlo Boccadoro).

The Elimination Round, the Semifinal Round and the 1st Final Round will be held at the San Barnaba of Brescia Auditorium.
The 2nd Final Round will be held at Brescia’s Sociale Theater.
All rounds shall be public.
A maximum of
25 competitors shall be admitted to the Semifinal Round;
a maximum of
6 competitors shall be admitted to the First Final Round;
a maximum of
3 competitors shall be admitted to the Second Final Round.

VII
Pianist collaborators shall be provided free of charge to the competitors who are nonetheless allowed to provide their own personal pianist for all the rounds if so desired.
The name of the personal pianist must be communicated at the time of application.
The competitors shall have the right to a 60-minute rehearsal with Competition’s official pianist prior to the Semifinal Round and a 120-minute rehearsal prior to the 1st Final Round.

VIII
Competitors must play the pieces from memory.
The scores of the Sonatas for violin and piano, or for solo violin, or the piece for violin by Carlo Boccadoro may be used.

PROGRAM

ELIMINATION ROUND (max. 25 minutes)
• Choice of one of these Solo Violin Sonatas:
- Prokofiev, op. 115
- Ysaÿe, op. 27 No. 1-2-3-4-5-6
- Bartok (just the Chaconne and Fugue)

• An important piece of choice from the
Solo Violin repertoire of the 17th, 18th, or 19th centuries

SEMIFINAL ROUND (max. 60 minutes, max. 25 candidates)
• Choice of a Violin and Piano Sonata by:
- Franck
- Fauré
- Brahms
- Schumann

• Schubert, Rondo brillante for Violin and Piano, opus no. 70 D895

• One of these virtuoso pieces of your choice:
- Bazzini The Dance of the Goblins op. 25
- Tchaikovsky Waltz – Scherzo op. 34;
- Kreisler Recitative and Scherzo - Caprice op. 6
- Paganini “Nel Cor più non mi sento” (MS 44)
- Saint Saens Introduction et Rondo Capriccioso op. 28 or Havanaise op. 83
- Wieniawski Polonaise in D Major op. 4 or Scherzo -Tarantella op. 16 or Polonaise Brillante in A Major op. 21

FIRST FINAL ROUND (max. 70 minutes, max. 6 candidates)
• One of these Sonatas for Violin and Piano
- Mozart, KV454
- Beethoven, op. 12 Nos. 1-2-3

• One of these Sonatas for Violin and Piano:
- Debussy
- Ravel (non Tzigane)

• Carlo Boccadoro, piece committed for the 12th City of Brescia Competition (
5-6 minutes approx.).
This piece shall be available on the site www.concorsoviolinobrescia.org in pdf format, starting July 15, 2010;

• A Sonata for Violin and Piano by:
- Prokofiev
- Bartok (only No. 2)
- Stravinsky (Only the Duo Concertante)
- Busoni
- Janacek
- Enescu (only No.3)

SECOND FINAL ROUND (max. 3 candidates)
• Mozart, Concerto KV219 (only Allegro Aperto)

• A Concert of your choice by
- Beethoven
- Brahms
- Mendelssohn (only op. 64)

JURY

The Competition’s Jury shall comprise seven eminent musicians from several nations:
- Filippo Juvarra, Italy
- Suna Kan, Turkey
- Alexei Lundin, Russia
- Mihaela Martin, Rumania
- Marco Rizzi, Italy
- Dora Schwarzberg, USA
- Kyoko Takezawa, Japan

Any jury member who has had teaching contacts with one or more of the competitors in the three years previous to the beginning of the competition shall abstain from making any judgment of these competitors during the entire competition period and he or she shall provide a written statement regarding this. Prior to taking a position, each Jury member must state his or her own positions regarding the candidates.
The Jury’s decision is final and irrevocable.
The Jury reserves the right not to award prizes. The Jury shall have the right to interrupt performances which exceed the time limit.
The Artistic Direction reserves the right to be present when the Jury is working.
One or more of the jury componend could by changed in case of force majeur.

PRIZES (after taxes)

Three official prizes shall be awarded:

City of Brescia International Violin Competition (indivisible):
€ 12,000.00 awarded to the winner of the competition;

“Romano Romanini” Prize: € 3,500.00 awarded to second place;

“Vittoria Alata” [Winged Victory] Prize: € 2,500.00 awarded to third place.

The participants to the First Final Round get € 500.00 as reimbursement.

The winner of the “City of Brescia International Violin Competition” Grand Prize shall be guaranteed an important series of concerts in Italy and abroad, as well as participation in Brescia’s “October with Great Violinists” Festival in October, 2011.
The list of institutions willing to host the Winner’s concerts shall be published on the Internet site www.concorsoviolinobrescia.org as soon as they are official.
Only the Grand Prize winner of the “City of Brescia International Violin Competition” shall be able to use the title of Absolute Winner of the Competition. Otherwise, the title shall be rendered invalid and the fraud shall be reported to the World Federation of International Music Competitions of Geneva.
All six Finalists participating in the 1st Final Round can claim the title of ”Competition Finalist.”
Special awards are also provided. This list shall be published on the site www.concorsoviolinobrescia.org as soon as it is official.

FINAL DISPOSITIONS

The organizational committee reserves the right to record and film all the competition rounds for radio and television.
Each candidate’s signature on the application commits him or her to accept the entire regulations, the competition procedure, and the Jury’s judgment, as well as provide their consent to DL 30.6.2003 nr 196, the Italian law regarding the use of personal data for conducting the competition and relative artistic promotion.
In case of dispute, the only legally valid text shall be the original text in Italian.
Only the Low Courts of Brescia have the right to deliberate if any controversey arises.
